Our commitment to our customers, our colleagues and our climate

We love holidays as much as you do – and we want to create happy memories for our customers. But we also know that going on holiday has an impact on the environment and needs to be more sustainable so we can keep enjoying our getaways for the long term.

Why do we care? Because we take pride in doing the right thing for our customers, our colleagues and the communities that welcome us – it’s at the heart of everything we do here at Jet2.

That’s why we’re taking action today for a better tomorrow, reducing that impact and becoming an even more responsible business.

In the short term, we’re taking a practical approach and investing in what we know works now, but we’re also keeping a close eye on developing technologies so we can stay flexible in the long term. We can’t do everything right away, so we won’t try to impress you with the latest jargon or waste our resources on things we’re not confident will work.

We’ll always tell you exactly what we’re doing, when and why. We’re on a journey and we want to take you on it too – in the air, on the ground and in resort.

Sustainability across your journey

Our strategy considers sustainability across your journey – on the ground, in the air and in resort.

In the air

Bringing Sustainable Aviation Fuel into our operations

In April 2023, we invested in a new Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) plant in the North West of England – at Ellesmere Port, near Manchester and Liverpool. SAF can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% over its lifecycle compared to conventional jet fuel. Once built, the plant will convert 600,000 tonnes of non-recyclable household waste into around 100 million litres of SAF a year.

Between 2028 and 2042, we expect to get more than 200 million litres of SAF from this plant, achieving lifecycle carbon emission reductions totalling nearly half a million tonnes (400,000) compared to conventional jet fuel. While this is only a small part of our total fuel usage, we’ll continue to take further action in this area. The plant will also generate up to 1,500 jobs, continuing our commitment to providing opportunities in the North of England.

We’ve also bought just over 200 tonnes of SAF for use at Malaga Airport, and just under 1,000 tonnes for use at Bristol and London Stansted. This makes up 1% of our 2024 fuel mix at these airports, one year before the introduction of government mandates. Increasing use of SAF is a key part of our carbon transition plan and we have targeted to use a minimum of 15% SAF in our total fuel mix by 2035.

Investing in newer and more fuel-efficient aircraft

We’ve bought 98 Airbus A321/A320neo aircraft, which could eventually extend to 146 aircraft. The new Airbus A321neo delivers an almost 20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions per seat compared to previous generation single-aisle models. With a capacity of 232 passengers, the new Airbus A321neo planes mean we can grow in line with the demand for our flights and holidays.

On the ground

We power our Jet2 owned offices with renewable energy we’ve bought, plus, more than 50% of the ground service equipment we own is powered by electricity, either fully electric or hybrid. We also continue to grow our electrification programme to help reduce our ground-based emissions and aim to reduce emissions by 99% by 2035.

Certified Sustainable Hotels

We’ve introduced our Certified Sustainable Hotels collection to give you the option to choose accommodation that meets an official global standard for sustainability as part of your Jet2holidays package with us. These hotels have been assessed by an independent organisation, whose standards are either recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) or the organisation itself has been accredited by the GSTC. The standards cover several things these hotels do, such as management, impact on local communities, supporting local heritage and actions to reduce environmental effects.

Our partnership with Green Key

We're teaming up with Green Key, one of these independent organisations, to help more of our hotel partners meet a standard for hotel sustainability and join our collection.

Social value

The key to our long-term success is people. That includes a talented workforce from a broad range of backgrounds, plus well-supported communities in the places we operate here in the UK and in the destinations we fly to. Our strategy also includes our social value framework, through which we’ll continue to support our colleagues and local communities by adding positive value through the opportunities we create.

Our colleagues

We’re committed to retaining and attracting the very best talent. From our training and development programmes to our wellbeing activities, we strive to make Jet2 one of the best places to work. We also believe every role at Jet2 is a sustainability role – you can hear it from our colleagues by reading about their experiences in our strategy below.

Where we operate

From our big investments in more efficient aircraft and SAF to working with emerging talent and our annual donations to charitable organisations of over £500,000 per year, we team up with lots of important partners to achieve our sustainability goals. We also pledged £650,000 of apprenticeship funding to support independent travel agent partners in developing the next generation of talent in their stores.

A snapshot of our plan for the next 10 years

  • We’ll reduce our carbon intensity by 35% by 2035, in line with the official science-based aviation targets
  • 99% of the ground service equipment we own will be powered by electricity by 2035
  • We’ll increase our Certified Sustainable Hotels collection to at least 3,000 properties
  • We’re committing to holding ourselves accountable through annual disclosure reports
